Here we've collected various tips and tricks related to security of the Windows Me/98/95 operating system. As you are probably aware, Microsoft has not made (and, probably, never intended to make) Windows Me/98/95 a secure operating system. The only security tool included in Windows 98/95 is System Policy Editor, which is very limited in use, confusing to set up, and can be easily bypassed (unless your computer is connected to a secure network).

Some of the recommendations can be applied to the Windows NT-based versions of Windows (such as Windows XP, 2000, and NT4), however, unless we explicitely mention otherwise, all recommendations are assumed to be applied to the MS-DOS based versions of Windows (that is Windows Me, 98, and 95).

The tips and tricks collected here are intended to provide information on making a stand-alone computer as secure as possible without the use of third-party security tools (we note, however, the cases where the third-party tools, such as Folder Guard^®, offer an easier or a more elegant solution).
