How to restrict Dial-Up Networking:

Note: The following information applies to the DOS-based version of Windows (such as Windows 95, 98, and Me) only. If you use an NT-based version of Windows (such as Windows NT, 2000, or XP), you should use the built-in System/Group Policy Editor to control access to the Dial-Up Networking (DUN) settings.

The easiest way to prevent users from connecting to the Internet via Dial-Up Networking (DUN) (and from changing its settings) is by deleting or renaming the file RNAUI.DLL, located in the Windows\System folder.

For a more flexible control of the user access to this file, you may wish to use Folder Guard. This software lets you prevent access to this file for some users yet permit such access for others. For example, with Folder Guard you can allow access to this file for yourself, to be able to use and adjust properties of the DUN as necessary, yet restrict other users from accessing this feature.

Here is the procedure for setting this up with Folder Guard:

  • First, run Folder Guard and use its Edit - Add File command to add the file RNAUI.DLL to the list of items shown in the main window of Folder Guard. This file is located in the system folder (usually it is C:\Windows\System ).

  • Select the Default entry in the User List of Folder Guard, and use the Attributes - Access - No Access command of Folder Guard to assign the no access attribute to the file RNAUI.DLL. This will make this file inaccessible for all users of the computer.

  • Now select your user name in the User List, and use the Attributes - Access - Full Access command of Folder Guard to assign the full access attribute to the file RNAUI.DLL. This will make this file fully accessible when you log onto the computer using your user name.

  • Now save the changes and enable the protection, as usual. For more information, refer to Folder Guard Help.
