How to restrict the Save As Wallpaper command of Internet Explorer:

You can prevent using the Save As Wallpaper command of Internet Explorer by assigning the read-only attribute to the file that is used by Internet Explorer as the wallpaper. Here is the step-by-step procedure:

  • First, use the Save As Wallpaper command of Internet Explorer once again to select the picture you would like to be used as such a wallpaper. That is, visit a web site or open a HTML document that contains the picture you like, right-click on the picture and choose Save As Wallpaper from the shortcut menu. After you have restricted this command, other users won't be able to change this wallpaper to some other picture.

  • Now close Internet Explorer, and open Control Panel - Display instead. Select the Background tab, if necessary, and make a note of the name of the wallpaper selected. In English version of Windows it is Internet Explorer Wallpaper, but the name can be different in other versions of Windows. Take a note of it and close the Display and Control Panel windows.

  • Now run Windows Explorer, open the Windows folder (usually it is C:\Windows), select the file Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp, right-click on the file, and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. In the Properties dialog box, check the Read-only box and press OK.

Of course, the protection described above can be easily removed by a user. For a more strong protection, you may wish to use Folder Guard to protect access to the Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp file:

  • Run Folder Guard and use its Edit - Add File command to add the file Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp to the list of items shown in the main window of Folder Guard. This file is located in the Windows folder (usually it is C:\Windows ).

  • Use the Attributes - Access commands of Folder Guard to assign one of the following attributes to the file Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp:

read-only: Users will be able to see the wallpaper you have chosen, but they won't be able to change it.

no access: Users will not be able to see the wallpaper you have chosen, and they won't be able to change it.
